Crowns and CAP Q & A

How do I know if I need a dental crown or “cap” on my tooth?

Most adults do not need crowns on their teeth until middle age, but sometimes children require a crown if they crack a tooth or have teeth with a high risk of decay. A crown, or “cap” as it is sometimes called, fits over a natural tooth to strengthen it, protect it from further decay, or hide discoloration and stains. Dr. Brown may recommend a crown when there is little or no tooth left for a filling, after you’ve had a root canal, or to help support a dental bridge.

Because of their ability to extend the life of existing teeth for many years, crowns are often an excellent choice for restorative dental care. They make your teeth look and function better, and for optimum convenience with minimal downtime, Tria Dental Tysons offers same-day crowns.

What are dental crowns made of?

Permanent crowns are made from a variety of materials including gold, stainless steel, porcelain, and ceramic. Tria Dental Tysons offers three types of crowns: enamel, porcelain-fused, and gold.

A porcelain-fused crown is porcelain fused over a metal layer. The metal provides extra reinforcement to a section of teeth, like a bridge, that needs extra support. Porcelain-fused crowns combine the strength of metal with an appearance similar to natural teeth.

What can I expect at my dental crown appointment?

The length and number of your appointments depend on which type of dental crown you choose. Traditional crowns often require two dental visits and use of a temporary crown while the custom one is being made. The first appointment involves preparing the tooth for its permanent crown and may include filling, reshaping, or filing down the existing tooth.

During the first visit, Dr. Brown puts a temporary crown in place that you wear until the permanent crown is ready. At your second appointment, Dr. Brown replaces the temporary crown with your custom-made permanent one by carefully cementing it into place. This visit takes about two hours.

Same-day crowns offer busy men and women the advantage and convenience of one appointment. Tria Dental Tysons has state-of-the-art CEREC technology, which creates the custom dental restoration specifically for your tooth in just one appointment. Not only do you get your new crown in one visit, but Dr. Brown can usually put it in place in about 10 minutes.

Dr. Brown and her team can determine which kind of crown is right for you based on your individual needs and aesthetic concerns. Call or schedule an appointment online today.
